Artifact: Shared Vision Paper - ITEC 7410
Reflection
Briefly describe the artifact and the context in which it was created. What was your individual contribution(s)?
The Shared Vision Paper was assigned in order to explore my vision, as well as the vision for my school. It provided the opportunity to explore the vision of Sterling Elementary and the stakeholders in the community. This paper was developed at the same time that Sterling Elementary was creating a new vision statement, so it was very relevant at the time. This was an individual assignment, and I developed my paper on my own. However, I was a part of the committee at my school that was responsible for creating our school vision statement, so I had input from administrators as well as other staff members.
Explain how this artifact demonstrates mastery of the standard/element under which it is placed.
Standard 1.1 calls for the development and implementation of a shared vision for the use of technology, learning, and leadership. The Shared Vision paper demonstrates my ability to develop and implement a shared vision, in that I was a part of the committee that actually developed this statement for our school. The paper defines the process we went through in order to develop this vision, as well as how it was implemented. I was an active part of both stages of this shared vision statement.
The development of the statement was a process that took place over several weeks and involved many staff members. We surveyed staff members as well as stakeholders, in order to assure that we were creating a shared vision. The vision we created was focused on the use of technology. We included how the technology would be used for learning, by including training for staff and students. We also established technology leaders in our school, so that learning remains ongoing. Our stakeholders were encouraged to provide input for our technology vision, so that they will also be a part of the growth at Sterling Elementary. All of the stakeholders see the importance and value of technology in teaching, learning and leadership.
The implementation of the vision statement at Sterling Elementary has been an ongoing process, of which I have been an active part. The artifact provided illustrates the process of implementation of the vision statement at Sterling Elementary School. Our committee met with various teams throughout the school to ensure that they all understood the school’s vision for technology. I have been active in ensuring implementation of our vision throughout our school. The Shared Vision paper helped me to understand my part in developing and implementing this vision throughout our school.
What did you learn from completing this artifact? What would you do differently to improve the quality of the artifact or the process involved in creating the artifact?
Creating this Shared Vision paper was a valuable experience, as I believe that many schools are still behind in their implementation of technology standards. While all schools use technology to various extents, many don’t have a vision specifically for the use of technology. In developing our vision statement for our school, I am not sure that technology would have been included, if I hadn’t been completing this assignment at the same time. It is crucial to have technology visions, so that we have some guidelines and expectations for our teachers. While I believe that the quality of this assignment was sufficient, everything has room for improvement. I believe that I could have improved this artifact by including some individual interviews with teachers about the vision for our school. I believe that it would be very valuable to randomly interview teachers throughout the year to see how implementation is going in their classrooms, as well as to follow up with any guidance as needed.
How did the work that went into creating the artifact impact school improvement, faculty development or student learning? How can the impact be assessed?
Creating the Shared Vision for our school helped to improve our school, as it made everyone more aware of their technology use. Through implementation of the vision statement, teachers began to make a point to use and document use of technology in more areas of their teaching. As the majority of testing in our school has shifted to computer administration, it is critical that our students have experience using computers in many ways, so that this is not a hindrance to success on testing. Thanks to our technology vision, teachers are intentional about their planning to include the use of technology in everyday instruction. The impact can be measured through observation, lesson plans and surveys. This should include surveys with community stakeholders as well, as it is important that we continue to be accountable to our community. Through this shared vision, Sterling Elementary will see greatness in the use of technology.
