Briefly describe the artifact and the context in which it was created. What was your individual contribution(s)?
This artifact is a PowerPoint presentation that I created to be presented to the faculty. The purpose of this was to review the data to develop a plan to improve instructional practices and maximize student learning. The PowerPoint showed demographic data, CCRPI, and population growth, as well information about the programs we offer and how we compare with the state and with other schools. I created this PowerPoint independently with information I obtained from the principal, school website and the state of Georgia website.
Explain how this artifact demonstrates mastery of the standard/element under which it is placed.
Standard 2.8 requires that the candidate model and facilitate the effective use of digital tools and resources to systematically collect and analyze student achievement data, interpret appropriate interventions to improve instructional practice and maximize student learning. This artifact demonstrates my mastery of this standard in all areas. First, I used digital tools and resources to create the PowerPoint. I also obtained most of my data through research on the internet. I presented the data to the staff in order to guide discussions, which resulted in suggestions for interventions that would improve instructional practice and maximize student learning. As teachers entered the room, they chose a card with one of three different pictures on it. This helped them to divide into groups. During the discussion, the groups matched the card with the questions on the PowerPoint, so that they would know what they were responsible for discussing. I believe that getting the whole staff together to discuss these things brought the data to the forefront of our minds, and it gave us a focus for improvement.
What did you learn from completing this artifact? What would you do differently to improve the quality of the artifact or the process involved in creating the artifact?
I learned that looking at data as a whole and with colleagues helps to gain some perspective that may be missed when one looks at the information alone. I was impressed with the level of discussion that was generated by the data analysis. I admit that this is one area in which I felt the least confident, and I believe that I certainly could have done a better job on this one. I should have used more test data. I should have showed test data over a few years to look for growth and by domain in order to see if there were some areas we were struggling with, in order to plan for school improvement. I focused more on the demographic data than on achievement data. I believe if I had focused on achievement data, we could have come up with different plans for improvement.
How did the work that went into creating the artifact impact school improvement, faculty development or student learning? How can the impact be assessed?
As stated in the previous paragraph, I don’t believe it was as effective as it could have been. However, I do believe that it did help with school improvement, in that it helped to start some discussions that needed to occur. We did implement a few new programs that most likely led to student learning increases, just not as much as I would have liked. The impact can be assessed through the change in the student work, productivity and test scores.
