Standard 4.2 Safe, Healthy, Legal & Ethical Use
The candidate will model and facilitate the safe, healthy, legal and other ethical uses of digital information and technologies.
Briefly describe the artifact and the context in which it was created. What was your individual contribution(s)?
The artifact that I chose to include to show mastery of standard 4.2 is the Internet Safety blog entry that I posted when I took ITEC 7430. When we were learning the importance of internet safety, this blog was one of the assignments. In this time when technology is readily available to so many young people, it is critical that we teach internet safety early and remind them often. This was an assignment that I completed independently.
Explain how this artifact demonstrates mastery of the standard/element under which it is placed.
I believe that this artifact demonstrates my mastery of this standard in that I explained how important internet safety is, and I gave a personal example of the ways that your use of technology is something that follows you everywhere. I went on to explain what I did in my classroom to facilitate the safe and healthy use of technology. I created a KidBlog account, which gave my students the opportunity to begin to learn how to blog and share information, which they were in a protected digital environment. In my opinion, this is a wonderful way to get young kids to begin to be a part of the digital communities, while learning to follow safety guidelines. In this setting, I could see exactly what the students posted and, if needed, discuss specific issues of safety.
What did you learn from completing this artifact? What would you do differently to improve the quality of the artifact or the process involved in creating the artifact?
I was reminded that technology is wonderful and can be very scary all at the same time. It’s important that teachers are aware of changes in technology and safety precautions that we need to take. As soon as students begin to feel comfortable using the internet, we need to start to teach them about safe and healthy ways to use the internet. It’s also important, this early, to begin to teach students about the legal aspects of internet use. Students need to learn how to take information they’ve read and put it into their own words, as opposed to copying it directly, as plagiarism. KidBlog was really the only tool I used that allowed them to step outside the school “programs,” while still being protected. I believe the blog and my students’ experiences would have been better if I had explored a few more options.
How did the work that went into creating the artifact impact school improvement, faculty development or student learning? How can the impact be assessed?
This was one that I shared with the staff at my school. We brainstormed some ways to make sure that we are teaching safety and ethics as we are teaching computer skills. I worked with our computer lab teacher to be sure she has some lessons embedded where she specifically addresses safety, healthy, ethical and legal issues. The impact of that will be to monitor the computer lab lessons to ensure that these are being addressed.
