Standard 3.7 Communication and Collaboration
The candidate will utilize digital communication and collaboration tools to communicate locally and globally with students, parents, peers, and the larger community.
Briefly describe the artifact and the context in which it was created. What was your individual contribution(s)?
This artifact is the video skill assignment that I completed for ITEC 7445. It is a 4-minute video that I created independently using various Web 2.0 tools. I used this video to introduce my family to anyone watching. I added background music, voice over, and a short video clip to this video.
Explain how this artifact demonstrates mastery of the standard/element under which it is placed.
I included this artifact to demonstrate my mastery of standard 3.7 because I used a variety of digital tools to create this video. It was used to communicate with my classmates, but it has been on my blog and will remain there for anyone to see. This experience prepared me to take a new step in my classroom. We have student-led conferences, and I helped my students to create similar videos for their conferences. They were such a hit, and I believe that truly shows my mastery of this standard.
What did you learn from completing this artifact? What would you do differently to improve the quality of the artifact or the process involved in creating the artifact?
I learned to use screencast and other tools to create a smooth, effective video. I have a little different perspective, as I took time off in the middle of my coursework. Going back to watch this video served as a reminder that this is a way to help time stand still and to preserve memories. In the video, my youngest son was entering 7th grade; my middle son was entering high school, and my daughter was about to start her sophomore year in high school. Currently, they are about to start 10th grade, 12th grade and college sophomore year! To improve the video, I probably wouldn’t include my ex-husband. I also may have used more graphics in the video, to make it more interesting.
How did the work that went into creating the artifact impact school improvement, faculty development or student learning? How can the impact be assessed?
It helped me personally to learn to create a high-quality video. I could teach students to do this, which improved parent-student communication. An unexpected effect was that, because the students were so excited about their videos, the attendance at our student-led conferences was higher than ever!
