Reflection:
Briefly describe the artifact and the context in which it was created. What was your individual contribution(s)?
The artifact I included for this standard is my Coaching Journal. I created this journal when I had the opportunity to coach one of my colleagues. She was new to our school, although she was an experienced teacher. This experience was one that I enjoyed immensely, and I’m thankful that I kept this journal to use as a resource throughout my career. I created this journal independently.
Explain how this artifact demonstrates mastery of the standard/element under which it is placed.
I chose to include this artifact to demonstrate my mastery of Standard 3.1 because of the experience I gained through this assignment. I met with my colleague to collaborate on learning and teaching strategies to use in her classroom. This was such a unique experience, because she came to our school after 6 years of teaching online school. She was very comfortable with technology, but unsure of how the programs would work in a regular classroom. Classroom management was a struggle for her, having come from online school. Through collaboration and modeling, I was able to share ideas for how to use our technology programs in order to effectively manage her classroom and maximize student learning. Managing 23 students using prescriptive computer programs can be overwhelming, so I was happy to get the opportunity to work with her to create a system for making it work in her classroom. She was able to observe in my classroom, and I also modeled lessons with her students, so that she could see how it would work effectively.
What did you learn from completing this artifact? What would you do differently to improve the quality of the artifact or the process involved in creating the artifact?
Completing this artifact has taught me several things. For me personally, the most important thing I learned was probably the value in writing things down as I do them. For one thing, it helped me to remember what we had done before, but it also was nice to be able to show it to her as a part of our discussion. I also learned that using different methods of guidance or instruction with colleagues is as valuable as it is with students. I believe it was effective as it was, but I do believe that an improvement could be to ask the teacher to provide feedback in the journal. It would be nice to have her thoughts about my specific lessons, as well as about her implementation and how she felt about it.
How did the work that went into creating the artifact impact school improvement, faculty development or student learning? How can the impact be assessed?
This was one that may not have impacted overall large-scale school improvement, but it did help the two of us. It helped me to remember all of the basics of the programs we used, but it also reminded me of some of the enhanced features that I had forgotten. It helped her to learn and implement new technology into her classroom. An added benefit that I didn’t foresee was the fact that the rest of our team saw what we are doing, and they began to remember some of the “forgotten features” as well.
