Reflection:
Briefly describe the artifact and the context in which it was created. What was your individual contribution(s)?
This artifact is the report from my Assistive Technology module, in which I worked with a student with special needs to determine what assistive technology would be of benefit to him. His needs are unique, in that he is a twice-exceptional student. He is gifted, and he is autistic. Determining assistive technology for him was a process that involved meeting with special education teachers, his mother, and him. He certainly doesn’t “fit the mold,” of students needing assistive technology. I created the report with collaboration with all of these people.
Explain how this artifact demonstrates mastery of the standard/element under which it is placed.
I included this artifact to demonstrate my mastery of standard 3.4 because that was specifically the purpose for this assignment. Through this experience, I had the opportunity to facilitate the use of assistive technology to support Jameson, as student with specific special needs. I was able to arrange for him to have and to train him on the use of a voice recorder for his stories. This allowed him to be able to tell his stories as he thought of them and then to have more time to type, as he was just a beginning his keyboarding skills. As stated above, I collaborated with several people to determine what technology to use.
What did you learn from completing this artifact? What would you do differently to improve the quality of the artifact or the process involved in creating the artifact?
This experience has helped to prepare me for decision making in the future. I learned about the process involved in determining needed technology, as well as making requests for adaptive or assistive technology that may not be available in our school. I found that there were many types of assistive or adaptive technology of which I was unaware that can be very helpful to students with special needs. I believe that it would improve this artifact if I’d have researched many types of assistive or adaptive technology and created a table to use as a resource for available technology. Even though I wouldn’t have all of the forms of technology, it would be useful to have a table available of some of the more common.
How did the work that went into creating the artifact impact school improvement, faculty development or student learning? How can the impact be assessed?
This helped maximize student learning for this student in ways that were immediately apparent. The use of the voice recorder and computer, he was able to write the stories that he wanted to, without the frustration brought on when his handwriting couldn’t keep up with his thinking. This impact was assessed as he was able to complete stories and did so without complaining once he had the recorder.
