Standard 1.2 Strategic Planning
The candidate will facilitate the design, development, implementation, communication, and evaluation of technology-infused strategic plans.
Briefly describe the artifact and the context in which it was created. What was your individual contribution(s)?
The SWOT Analysis, or Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats Analysis was developed in order to analyze technology integration and plans for integration at Sterling Elementary. During this assignment, I was to define the strengths and weaknesses of our program, according to ISTE’s 8 Essential Conditions. This required me to collect data and provide recommendations to improve the technology programs at Sterling. This was an individual assignment, which I did complete independently. However, as part of the research for this, I collaborated with the administrators, instructional coach, as well as the media specialist.
Explain how this artifact demonstrates mastery of the standard/element under which it is placed.
This standard calls for the facilitation of a technology-infused plan. This artifact will demonstrate my ability to facilitate this plan, including the design, development, implementation, communication, and evaluation. Using ISTE’s 8 Essential Conditions, I collected data, evaluated the plan, and made recommendations for our technology plan, which was shared with our technology committee.
Early in this process, I realized that there really wasn’t a strategic plan in place at all for the use of technology. While there is technology available (4 desktops and a smartboard per classroom, a computer lab, a wireless lab and a media center offering many computers, a smartboard, as well as other technology), no one has taken the time to evaluate or even to guide the use of such technology. Based on what I’ve learned, this put our school at quite a disadvantage. Our school could be so much more productive with a plan for the use of technology. I worked in collaboration with the Technology committee to design a plan for our school, specifically for the use of technology. We compiled the data from the SWOT Analysis to develop our plan. Fortunately, the staff was willing to learn and work within the new plan. The development of the plan required interviews and surveys, so that we could determine what we needed to do. We communicated the new plan through emails, as well as through some professional development among teams. At the end of the year, we evaluated the progress and implementation of the strategic plan. We will continue to build on it each year.
What did you learn from completing this artifact? What would you do differently to improve the quality of the artifact or the process involved in creating the artifact?
First of all, I learned that Sterling Elementary has a long way to go to in order to use technology in the most effective manner possible. I also learned that this is a very effective tool to evaluate this strategic plan. It could also be used to evaluate many areas for improvement in a school. I believe that looking at everything-strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats, provided a very thorough picture to determine needs and directions.
How did the work that went into creating the artifact impact school improvement, faculty development or student learning? How can the impact be assessed?
Through the creation of the SWOT analysis, I was able to be a leader in developing a detailed plan for the use of technology. Our school environment and technology use has improved through the implementation of this plan. The impact of the analysis can be easily assessed by observing students in the classrooms, reviewing lesson plans and talking with staff and students. The use of technology has increased, but the teachers are also planning more effective lessons using technology in the classroom.
